How to hide politics on X (Twitter)
There is no single switch for this. Political posts reach you three ways: X recommends
them, people you follow repost them, and some accounts post little else. Each needs a
different fix, and the free ones go a long way.

1. Stop X recommending it
- Read Following, not For You. For You is where most political posts from
strangers come from. Following shows only accounts you chose.
- Untick political Interests. In Settings, under Privacy and safety, then
Content you see, open Interests and untick every political topic. X uses these to pick what
it shows you.
- Tell it when it gets it wrong. On a political post, the menu has a
"Not interested" option. It takes a few days of this before the feed changes.
2. Mute the words
Under Privacy and safety, then Mute and block, add muted words. Three settings matter on
each word: choose From anyone, not only people you don't follow; tick Home timeline;
and set the duration to forever, or until a news event is over.
Pick words that only ever mean politics. Party names, election, ballot, senate and the
names of the politicians you are tired of work well. Broad words like left,
right or vote hide far more than you meant. Mute has gaps of its own, covered in
why muted words still show posts.
3. Deal with the accounts
Muted words miss most of it, because the same accounts keep finding new ways to say it.
Muting or blocking the five or ten accounts that post it most usually does more than fifty
muted words. For people you follow who repost politics, open their profile menu and turn off
their reposts: you keep their own posts and lose what they share.
4. Read a List instead of a feed
Put the accounts you actually want, say the football, design or science people, into a
private List and pin it. A List shows only those accounts, in order, so politics only reaches
you if they post it themselves. It is the most reliable free fix, and it works on your
phone.
Extensions that block politics on X
Three Chrome extensions are built for this. Checked 4 November 2026:
| Extension | How it decides | Price |
| No more politics please | Community votes: a post is hidden for everyone once enough people mark it. 37 users, last updated September 2024. | Free |
| Hide Politics | Analyses posts and images, and hides political trends. 96 users, last updated September 2025. | Free, with in-app purchases |
| Muffle | Your own rules, on words in the post or in the author's bio and name. | $19 a year |
A voting extension needs other people to have seen a post first. Rules you write work on the
first post, though they read words, not pictures: an image of a headline gets through. On a computer, Muffle's filters go further than
muting in two ways:
- They match bios. People who post about politics all day usually say so in
their bio. One rule on a word in the bio hides all of them, whatever they post today.
- Nothing is left behind. Matching posts are removed before X draws them,
reposts included, so there is no "this post is muted" line to press.
Filters do not look inside quoted posts, and they need the $19 a year licence. If you would
rather not see any feed at all, turning the feed
off is free.
