A daily time limit for X (Twitter) that turns the feed off

Most time limits are a pop-up you learn to dismiss. This one does not nag. Once you pass it, your X (Twitter) feed is simply empty for the rest of the day, and everything else still works.

How to set a time limit on X

  1. Click the Muffle icon in Chrome's toolbar and choose Open dashboard.
  2. Go to No distractions.
  3. Under Screen time, pick a Daily limit: 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 or 120 minutes.

Time you already spent on X today counts towards it, and it resets at midnight. On a phone, extensions do not run; the feed guide covers what does.

What happens at the limit

Pick a limit of 15, 30 or 45 minutes, an hour, 90 minutes or two hours. Past it, No distractions turns itself on until midnight, your local midnight.

Need the feed back today? Untick it. The limit respects that for the rest of the day rather than switching itself back on a minute later. It is there to stop the drift, not to fight you.

How the time is counted

  • Only the tab you are looking at. A second X tab in the background adds nothing.
  • Only while you are using it. After two minutes with no mouse movement, scrolling or typing, the clock stops. It also pauses when the tab is in the background or the window is not focused. A tab left open overnight costs nothing.
  • On your machine. Minutes per day for the last 30 days, stored in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, because there is nowhere to upload it to.

The dashboard shows today against your limit and a bar for each of the last seven days, and This week puts the total beside the week before.

When this is not what you want

  • You want a lock you cannot undo. This one gives way when you untick it, on purpose.
  • Most of your time on X is on a phone. Muffle is desktop Chromium only.
  • You want X gone entirely. A site blocker is simpler and free.

Install it free.

Turning off the feed, a daily time limit and seeing who doesn't follow you back are free forever, with no account and no card. The rest is $19 a year at launch, renews yearly and can be cancelled any time. Most people buy it from inside the extension once they have seen it work.

Chrome, Edge, Brave and other Chromium browsers on desktop. No mobile, no Safari. A licence bought here activates in the extension; you do not have to install first.
